Deficit Spending in Madison Township
By Gregg Terhune
The current bunch that is in office at our township government failed their State Board of Accounts audit this year. You can see the audit if you go the the website for the State Board of Accounts. When I looked at their past audits, I was shocked to find that they have not passed an audit since they took office in 2007. But that was not the most remarkable thing I noticed. I also saw that each year Madison Township has spent more than what they were originally approved by the State.
They must submit a proposed budget to the state for final approval each year. The state then sends back approval for what it thinks is appropriate. The township has then borrowed what they need to cover what they want to spend. Notice last year, the township borrowed more than they had in tax revenue. This has created huge deficits.
It will take several years to pay off the debt that they have racked up in only three years.
